Indian skincare botanicals and the places they grow

A guide to the botanicals in Ruh & Ras skincare, what each does for the skin, and the region of India each is sourced from.

Why the place matters

A botanical is shaped by where it grows: its soil, its climate and its seasons. Ruh & Ras sources each botanical from the region where it grows best, and names that place on every product.

The botanicals in Ruh & Ras

Damask rose (Rosa damascena), from Hasayan, Uttar Pradesh: soothes and hydrates, and leaves skin feeling fresh. In the Rose Tonic Mist and the Musk Turmeric Ubtan.

Musk turmeric (Curcuma aromatica, kasturi manjal), from Wayanad, Kerala: traditionally soothing and antioxidant, without the yellow stain of kitchen turmeric. In the Musk Turmeric Ubtan and the Sandalwood Face Pack.

Indian white sandalwood (Santalum album), from Mysuru, Karnataka: cools, soothes and brightens. In the Sandalwood Face Pack.

Multani mitti (Fuller’s earth), from Barmer, Rajasthan: draws out excess oil and impurities and refines the look of pores. In the Sandalwood Face Pack.

Licorice root (mulethi, Glycyrrhiza glabra): helps calm redness and even out skin tone. Orange peel (Citrus sinensis): revives dull skin and gently exfoliates. Chickpea (besan): the classic ubtan base, cleanses without stripping. Oats (Avena sativa): calm and comfort sensitive skin. Almond (Prunus amygdalus): nourishes and softens, with a fine polish.
